New York Public Library
Brief: Design a billboard to be located at various information points throughout the city that would encourage New Yorkers to visit the library and sign up for a library card.
Imagery Choices
Having spent my formative years in NYC, I know that the NYPL lion is an iconic image; I scaled the lion up to create immediate recognition.
In addition, these billboards provide direct information about which metro lines lead to the main branch of the public library and can be easily translated into any of NYC’s 10 citywide official languages.
Understanding the user
During my research, I learned that over half of New Yorkers use public transportation. Understanding that transit was a public service with which they were already comfortable, I incorporated actual metro map elements to the design as a bridge to getting to the library and a tote to carry their books.
